Finish It!   Kay Brathol-Hostvet

We all have those unfinished projects--paintings, collage, drawings. Whether you just need the time, new ideas, or fresh eyes to view your work, this workshop should help generate some completed projects. This loosely-structured workshop will include beginning and ending group critiques, handouts and "ideas" examples, and uninterrupted work time with as much or as little personal attention from the instructor as you request. Sun, Oct 2    10 - 4    $70

Book Structures: Variations on the Accordion   Jackie Hefty

Versatile and adaptable, concertina or accordion style book structures lend themselves to so much more.  We will 'play' with and investigate variations on a theme using these structures.  A style or structure that can be woven together, layered as a tunnel book, bound with a coptic stitch or played out like the instrument it is often called by. Linear progression of a story line or imagery is favored by adults and children alike, yet it can be appreciated for the simple alluring structural design alone.  Paper choices/options will be discussed. Participants will need to purchase or use from your personal stash as appropriate. No book making experience needed, no specialized tools required to continue your 'play' at home. If you already have any of the items in the Basic Tool Kit, please bring.  Thurs/Fri Oct 13/14  1 - 4:30  $ 115/$10 materials

Collage: Fun and Freedom  Jackie Hefty

Papers, paint, glue and space to spread out. What better ingredients for fun.  Utilizing the elements of design, add some texture, sprinkle some contrasting or harmonious color, add a little tension or perhaps a soothing flow, highlight with a metallic, and you are good to go. If only. . . You are invited to come, explore, play and relax. Small little jewels or large wall statements, what is your comfort level?   Fri. Oct. 21 , 1 - 5  $60/$10 materials

Snappy Scrappy with photo

Snappy Scrappy   Jackie Hefty

Feeling a little sassy?  Join us for a 'breaking the rules' fabric collage playful day. We will be raiding the fabric stash, using a variety of quilting and upholstery remnants to create what we affectionately call "Snappy Scrappy".  Layers, textures, lace, ribbon, and jewelry, buttons, or beads combine to become your individualized Snappy Scrappy.  Hand or machine stitch your choice pieces into a wall hanging, book cover or fabric frame for a photo.   We will have a few 'simple' sewing machines available, yarns and thread, an assortment of pre-fringed upholstery fabrics (thanks Mom!) and background canvas for you, along with buttons, beads and other trinkets.  You are encouraged to bring any materials you wish to use and/or share. (Clean out your stash, well, within reason...)  It isn't necessary to have a quilting or fiber arts background, having a sense of color combinations and design will be helpful. A playful attitude is greatly desired.

Sat Oct 29, 1 - 5  $55/$15 materials

Just a little note:

Many of the classes I personally offer are meant to provide a progression in the inter-related book arts opportunities. It is not necessary to take them in any specific order, but understand they are complimentary in nature. By taking a decorative paper workshop, you may utilize your work in a book structure as text pages, end sheets or as a cover. Likewise, by taking papermaking you may use the results in a book or as a substrate for a print, drawing, painting, or with letterpress.   Think of them as part of, or a means to an end, not the end in themselves. (not that many can not stand alone and be appreciated as completed work) It is also for this reason I repeat some foundational workshops more often. Understanding the method to my madness may be helpful when making workshop choices.
