Secret Belgium Binding   Jackie Hefty

Challenging yet beautiful to behold; front cover, spine and back cover, all held together with a lacing pattern. Signatures sewn to laces.  The width of the spine is determined by the thickness of the signatures (text block) which is determined by the weight/thickness of the paper and the number of signatures.  You determine it all with your choice of papers/materials available. Shown here with 90# watercolor paper. Book may be opened fairly flat. Many holes to punch, bring your Japanese Hole Punch if you have one.   Thurs Sept 22, 1-5  $65/$10 materials

Box Making: Clam Shell Box / Drop Spine Box  Jackie Hefty

Based on using a conventional size of 8 1/2 x 11", we will create a housing for papers, books and treasures. Adjustments for various sizes will be discussed for individualized future projects. A good metal ruler, a sharp utility knife, a cutting matt and a clear head will be most important.  Participants will have the opportunity to customize the covers with commercially available materials or personalized, hand decorated options.    Sat & Sun   Sept 24 & 25   1- 4:30   $125

Just a little note:

Many of the classes I personally offer are meant to provide a progression in the inter-related book arts opportunities. It is not necessary to take them in any specific order, but understand they are complimentary in nature. By taking a decorative paper workshop, you may utilize your work in a book structure as text pages, end sheets or as a cover. Likewise, by taking papermaking you may use the results in a book or as a substrate for a print, drawing, painting, or with letterpress.   Think of them as part of, or a means to an end, not the end in themselves. (not that many can not stand alone and be appreciated as completed work) It is also for this reason I repeat some foundational workshops more often. Understanding the method to my madness may be helpful when making workshop choices.
