Bookmaking: The Basics  Crash course! or  Great Refresher!   Jackie Hefty
 
Learn the basics as you develop a portfolio of book structures to use for journals, one-of-a-kind books, or gifts. Explore choosing, folding, tearing, and cutting paper, besides learning basic sewing and gluing techniques to create a selection of unique books with minimal supplies.  Discover a plethora of ideas for how to utilize beautiful decorated papers. Also a good foundation for more advanced book structures. Continue making beautiful books at home with just a few basic tools. Watercolor 101   Cynthia Quinn

This two-day introductory Watercolor 101 painting class is designed to provide an overview of watercolor painting.  Working with a simple five pigment system, we start by discussing pigment properties and making a color wheel. From that knowledge we will practice how to mix any color from the five. Demos of glazing techniques, water surface and paint brush options and texture making will follow. This class is perfect for beginners, but will help inform more advanced painters who have not learned the basics in a class. Using cast metal type and a selection of wood type, you will handset a short quote, poem or personal greeting from the assortment of Whispering Woodlands fonts. Type is set or placed in order, upside down and backwards. Challenging at first to say the least.  Print multiple copies to send to family and friends. There are also stock images, wingdings, etc. that can be used to enhance your piece. Think of this as pre rubberstamping, used in production printing before the typewriter or computer.  Discover the history behind the printing press, used as both a workhorse and an art form.  Class size limited to 4.    Fri/Sat/Sun  Aug 21, 22, 23  (Friday 1 - 4:30, Sat & Sun  10 - 4)   $195/$10 materials

Like many people, have you always wondered about trying your hand at painting?  Painting Sampler is the perfect opportunity, explore the similarities and differences between three different mediums. This one-day class will introduce you to watercolor, acrylic and oil painting techniques. Try three different art mediums without having to invest in all three materials lists . . . all in one day. Better understand the unique characteristics of each and maybe there will be one you will really like. We will work inside and outside weather permitting. Suminagashi Floating Inks (Paper Marbling technique of the Far East)    Jackie Hefty

A decorative paper technique with uses in bookmaking, collage, scrapbooking, letterpress printing and card making. Subtle use of swirling colored inks on thin Japanese papers. Minimal supplies necessary to continue at home.  Sat Aug 29  1-4:30   $55/$10 materials
