Paired Needle Binding Jackie Hefty

It just sounds difficult, not really so hard, but it gives you bragging rights! You will be sure to impress your friends or family with your bookmaking skills when you show them this creation. An exposed stitching design on the spine of the book resembles a herringbone pattern.  This book is designed to lie flat when open which allows for ease in drawing or writing. Makes a great gift! Previous book making is recommended, but not required. Minimal supplies are necessary to continue making beautiful books at home. Class sizes are limited.    Sun April 12,   1 - 4:30    $60/$5 materials (Papers will be available for purchase if you need for your signatures, see supply list for more information.)

No needles or sewing either! One sheet of paper can become a book with the correct folding, creasing and cutting. (Think paper dolls.) We will explore the possibilities of meandering books, accordion books with folded paper covers and a pocket accordion. Bring some decorative papers if you'd like, we will also make a few of our own to use for the books.  Mon April 13, 1 - 4:30  $55/$5 materials

Color mixing

Registration Closed - Wait List only

Mixing the Colors You Want: color mixing for oil painters Jan Norsetter

In this class we will explore mixing oils using 6 tubes of color plus white. We’ll mix darks, neutral greys, greens, pastels, and anything else you can think of. We’ll make color charts to keep track of our mixes and we’ll do all of this without dirtying a brush. Color mixing is a good time to practice wielding a palette knife. There are lots of oil colors out there. It can be expensive to buy them all and a bit of a pain to keep track of them. We’ll explore the basics and then we’ll add some additional colors for comparison.  Sat April 18,  10 - 4  $100/$10 materials

100 Starts

Registration Closed - Wait List only

 100 Starts in Oil Painting
         Jan Norsetter

In this workshop we will start as many paintings as we can maybe not 100 but a minimum of 20. We’ll spend 10 minutes or less on each painting. We will distill the essence of a scene into as few colors and as few strokes as we can. We will refer to this style of painting as the direct method. No underpainting, just bold strokes that describe the planes, values, lights, darks of the scene. We’ll try to nail the value structure of the scene. We’ll talk about placement/composition, shadows, lighting. We can use any colors we want, but we will start with black and white (which we will mix into 3 shades of grey plus black and white).

Please, no solvents inside the building. I have developed strategies for handling paint using Gamblin Solvent free gel or M Graham alkyd walnut oil but unless your paint is really stiff you won’t need medium. I’ll bring both the gel and the walnut oil so you don’t have to buy those two for the class. For cleaning my brushes I use brush soap and water.  Sun. April 19, 10 - 4 $105
