The Art of Drawing

Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Drawing is the foundation skill for all the visual arts, both 2D and 3D. In this workshop, you will develop better drawing skills and gain more pleasure in the drawing process. A lack of drawing skills often relates to a lack of understanding of spatial concepts, and with problems with artistic 'vision' – the ability to create in artwork what is in one's imagination. Work on developing an individual drawing style, learn ways to loosen up, and learn to see and measure accurately. We will explore gestural and expressive mark-making, exaggeration or distortion, and co-operative drawing using the basic drawing tools of graphite, charcoal, pen and ink. This workshop is appropriate for all skill levels.   Wed, June 11, 18, & 25   9-12 each day $155/$7 materials

Snappy Scrappy with photo

Snappy Scrappy   Jackie Hefty

Feeling a little sassy?  Join us for a 'breaking the rules' fabric collage playful day. We will be raiding the fabric stash, using a variety of quilting and upholstery remnants to create what we affectionately call "Snappy Scrappy".  Layers, textures, lace, ribbon, and jewelry, buttons, or beads combine to become your individualized Snappy Scrappy.  Hand or machine stitch your choice pieces into a wall hanging, book cover or fabric frame for a photo.   We will have a few 'simple' sewing machines available, yarns and thread, an assortment of pre-fringed upholstery fabrics (thanks Mom!) and background canvas for you, along with buttons, beads and other trinkets.  You are encouraged to bring any materials you wish to use and/or share. (Clean out your stash, well within reason...)  It isn't necessary to have a quilting or fiber arts background, having a sense of color combinations and design will be helpful. A playful attitude is greatly desired.  (Also offered on weekdays in April.)

Journaling Pages

Journaling Pages (text &/or image)   Sue Beavers

Susan uses music, art and writing to tap into emotions. Feelings are expressed within a safe and contained environment through listening to music and drawing. Using the non-dominant hand, the creative, spiritual, feeling part of the brain is accessed to help explore and better understand yourself and your emotions. Through creativity, the soul instinctively heals itself. No artistic talent is required.    The non-dominant hand exercises enable the intuitive, creative, spiritual problem solving side of the brain to be accessed.  Minimal supplies, 8x10 sketch book or journal with unlined paper and a set of 12 markers. Plein Air Painting in Oils

For Beginning & Intermediate oil painters

Jan Norsetter

In this workshop I will show you two different methods of approaching plein air painting. We will use one for a morning painting and one for an afternoon painting. For outdoor painting I generally use a limited palette of colors. I will show you how I manage my palette, what paint colors I use and how to mix colors using 7 tubes of paint (see supply list below). We’ll talk about placement, shadows, lighting, painting to finish and clean up. I don’t use solvents most of the time so I have developed strategies for handling paint using Gamblin Solvent free gel or M Graham alkyd walnut oil and for cleaning my brushes with soap and water.  Fri June 20, 9 - 4  $100

Hand Book   Ingrid Dijkers

The imagery used in this Hand Book developed out of my love for doodling combined and the art of Mehndi, the ancient art of temporary lacework tattoos done with herbal henna.  This application of henna as a temporary form of skin decoration is used in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh as a ceremonial art form which originated in ancient India. This 5" X 8" Hand Book is a unique vessel to capture daily inspirations, instructions, thoughts or can just be used as a basic journal.

This workshop will focus on binding this book and getting it ready for your journaling needs.  You are provided with 5 pages of collage imagery that you can begin working with in class and easily finish up later at home. Most materials are included in the provided kit.  The student list is short and simple.  You should already have most things at home. Fri June 27  1 - 4  $70/$20 materials

File Folder Journal  Ingrid Dijkers

A very unique approach to journaling and journal making, this workshop is more than just constructing a simple journal. We'll start by making a 12' roll of paper from a collection of unusual papers including - Braille, ledger paper, maps, old blue prints, pages from hymnals and foreign language books, all of which will be provided (but feel free to bring your own to share or trade with classmates). This will all be glued and sewn together before it's bound in a cover made from vintage stock File Folders (including metal tabs). We'll put this all together with a simple binding method to complete this eclectic and very workable unique personal journal. We'll talk about different ways of adding to and working in this journal and how to add beading to the spine.  Sat June 28 10 - 4:30  $145/$15 materials

"The Journal Obscura"  Ingrid Dijkers

Intrigued and inspired by the Camera Obscura, this journal was created and loosely based on this concept.  Loose pages instill memories of old photographs and have journaling on the back that are neatly housed inside the Journal

Obscura. Pages can be removed, flipped over or rearranged at will - a format that makes working on the pages and reading them a real pleasure.  Focus of this workshop is on constructing and finishing the Journal Obscura box with lens and preparing it for all your journaling needs.  We'll discuss different methods of making pages and techniques with provided samples. It is well suited for all levels.  Sun. June 29  10 - 4:30  $145/$15 materials
