You CAN Draw! For the Absolute Beginner    Kay Brathol-Hostvet     

         If you can ride a bicycle, operate a sewing machine, or drive a car, you can learn to draw, too!  The skill of drawing is simply a matter of eye-hand coordination and practice.  The focus of this workshop will be on how we learn to draw.  Drawing is a fun and relaxing hobby, a useful tool in planning home and garden projects, and a foundation skill for all the other visual arts.  If you are afraid to draw, Kay will alleviate those fears through fun drawing exercises and simple, straightforward directions to get you started.  All materials are provided including your own sketchbook and drawing tools to take home.  Sat, May 3     9 - 4:30   $105/$12 materials

Basic Book Structures Jackie Hefty

In this four-week class you can develop a portfolio of book structures to use for journals, one-of-a-kind books, or gifts. Explore choosing, folding, tearing, and cutting paper and learn basic sewing and gluing techniques to create a selection of unique books with minimal supplies. We encourage adding embellishments and personal memorabilia. Minimal supplies are necessary to continue making beautiful books at home.   No experience necessary.  Wed May 7, 14, 21, 28  6-9  $180/$15 materials

Calligraphy: the art of written forms   Jackie Hefty

Working with pen/brush, ink, and paper, learn the basics of several lettering styles. Hand-letter a favorite poem or quotation for gifts, create unique greeting cards, and more. Intro: Simple Screen Printing  & Intro to Thermofax Screens  Jackie Hefty

Join us as we approach Screen Printing on a shoe-string budget. Make your own small screen with thrift store materials. Explore water-based printing with a variety of simple screen resists. Learn to print images or visual textures (i.e. representational or not) on paper or fabric. Includes an introduction to Thermo-imaging (thermo fax machine) screen making using a high contrast images you provide..  No screen printing experience necessary and may be continued at home.  Fri May 9, 16 & 23  1-4:30  $155/20

Come and learn about the beauty and creative possibilities of hot wax. Using beeswax, pigment and resin, the encaustic process offers endless possibilities for creativity and personal expression.

This workshop is a great introduction if you’ve never worked with the medium before, and a useful refresher if you’ve worked with wax before. We will cover a variety of techniques including how to build layers, fuse, texture, embed objects, incise, collage and much more along with a working knowledge on how to melt and mix wax. No experience is necessary! There will be plenty of hands-on time as well as demos, examples and personal feedback throughout the day. All basic materials are provided.    Sat, May 17,  10 - 5  $115/$20 materials

Long Stitch Book Bindings  Jackie Hefty

Intermediate level book bindings that will further develop and challenge your creative book binding skills. Traditional and innovative approaches will be explored. Long Stitch book designs open flat which is an advantage when writing or drawing in them.  Recommend having basic bookmaking and sewing experience. Bring as many items that you already have from the Basic Tool Kit. Paper recommendations are on the supply list. Wed May 21 & 28,   1-4:30   $95/$10 materials
