Altered Books Jackie Hefty

Fun demonstrations, not for the faint of heart (or librarians) I have gathered enough information to give you 101 ways to alter a book, why not try a few out, as a group we may even cover all 101!  Explore the seemingly unlimited resources of inspiration that abound and give it a whirl. We'll be cutting, tearing, stitching and more. Some basic supplies will be required, but essentially you need to bring a sense of adventure, books to ‘repurpose' and as one of the workshops in the UK expressed it, "You need an old book or two and lots of courage to muck it up!!" Appropriate for all levels. Minimal supplies. Oct 5 & 7  12:30 - 3:30  $55

Watercolor Painting:

The Color Wheel & Limited Palettes Take control of your paint box! Cynthia Quinn

Don't waste time and money purchasing paints that you end up not using or liking. Cynthia will explain pigments, color wheel basics and how using limited palettes and color schemes can unify and strengthen your paintings. We'll make charts you can use for future reference in the morning with provided pigments, and then paint from your photo reference or a still life in the afternoon.

This class is suitable for a beginner all the way to an experienced painter, who like many, has never covered this information in a specific way. Bring a round, watercolor brush, size 6-8 (Winsor Newton Sceptre is a good brand, and not too expensive), a white plastic palette to mix paint on (a Robert Wood 12 x 16" palette would be a good size), you will also need a pencil, kneaded eraser, drafting tape or painters tape and paper towels.

Poly Litho with Barry Carlsen

Explore the artist-friendly process of polyester plate lithography. Prints will be created on an etching press, however this highly versatile medium is more direct than intaglio printing. It also eliminates the chemicals, processing time, costs, and technical difficulties associated with traditional lithographic or intaglio printing. No past printmaking experience is necessary.

This is a one day course with an optional second day. Materials and technical handouts will be provided. Students should come prepared with some ideas to pursue. The first day will began with a short history of lithography and a short series of technical demonstrations. The majority of time will be involved in creating a small black and white artist's edition. The second day can be utilized to add color to the edition by monoprinting, additional color plates or hand-coloring techniques. It can also be a day of independent exploration.

Autumn! Plein Air Painting in Soft Pastel

Kay Brathol-Hostvet

The warm colors and incredible textures of autumn practically beg us to get out there in nature!  Working in plein air at Whispering Woodlands is a true joy.  Soft pastel is perfect for depicting the textures and colors of the autumn landscape and is a very portable medium so it is ideal for plein air work.  We will use the studio as our home base but head outside to work directly from nature.  Kay will demonstrate several techniques that are especially helpful for outdoor work.  You will complete two small paintings that can be used as studies for larger studio works or might stand alone as plein air masterpieces!  Previous pastel or other painting experience is recommended. If bad weather, we will work in the studio from photographs or a nature-inspired still life.  All paper provided; see supply list for required materials. Class size limit: 10
