Introduction
to Letterpress Printing
Jackie
Hefty Using
cast metal letterforms (type), you will handset a short quote, poem or personal greeting from the assortment of Whispering
Woodlands fonts or typestyles. Type is set or placed in order, upside down and backwards. Challenging at first to say
the least. Print multiple copies to send to family and friends. There are also stock images, wingdings, etc. that
can be used to enhance your piece. Think of this as pre rubberstamping, used in production printing before the typewriter
or computer. Discover the history behind the printing press, used as both a workhorse and an art form. Class size
limited to 4. Tues
Aug 3, 10, 17, 24 10 - 1 $140/$10 materials
Due to recent requests,
we also offer Letterpress personal card making as a WW Mini, you just come and crank the press!

*Writing Workshops*
"
I'm from toad frogs, katydids, and Bachelor Buttons beside the stone well/ From Red Man Snuss and fast talkers/ From
early risers and biscuits cut with a shining tumbler against the floured board/ from coffee popping up in the perculator/like
a chipmunk from its hole....."
(and I have many variations) Exerpt

Establishing Identity
Gay Davidson-Zielske All of us are from somewhere. In fact, the first thing we ask strangers on a train is "Where
ya from?" and then get to names later. We establish identity, but also connect this way. My workshop
will help you vocalize where you are "from" and where you are "coming from" in many ways by working you
through a template poem (the original is by George Ella Lyon, but we do a sort of "homage") and encouraging
you to vary the pattern and use your own biographical material to best advantage. One student coming out of my workshop
just placed close to top in a fairly big contest using his "Where I'm From" poem. We will spend the first
part of the workshop generating materials, the second sharing bits and pieces with the group, then take some time to perfect,
come back together, and meet each other. This exercise produces amazing results. Past students have really appreciated this exercise and I have many excellent examples to share.

| What Lies Beneath by Kay Brathol-Hostvet |
Experimental
Acrylic Kay Brathol-Hostvet An intense, thought-provoking workshop experience! This three-day workshop will focus on the
application of acrylic paint in creating non-representational works based on technical experimentation, emotional and cerebral
responses to design and color exercises, journaling, music interpretation and group discussions. Acrylic is a wonderful
painting medium for experimentation because it dries quickly allowing a buildup of multiple layers, or drastic changes.
Throughout this process you will be creating an expressive, non-representational or abstract painting, as well as exploring
your own personality, motivation, and creativity. Students have called this workshop "life changing."
Painting experience in any medium is helpful; various warm-up exercises will familiarize you with the properties of acrylic
paint and basic elements of design. Some materials provided; see supply list for required materials. Thurs/Fri/Sat Aug 19, 20, 21,
9 - 4 daily $235/$7
